Tier 1 analysts watch the security information and event management (SIEM) platform and escalate what looks real. Tier 2 and Tier 3 analysts investigate those escalations, trace how far an intruder got, and lead containment once something like PHP2Shell shows up in the logs. Covering that work around the clock, not just during business hours, is most of what SOC staffing needs to solve for.

Cloud security staffing for workloads a patch can’t reach fast enough

Most companies no longer run a handful of servers they can patch by hand. A cloud security engineer is the person who can find every instance running an affected PHP version, isolate the ones that can’t be patched right away, and lock down the identity and access management (IAM) policies that limit what an attacker can reach if they get in anyway.

Zero trust engineers who assume the perimeter already failed

Zero trust architecture starts from the assumption that an attacker may already be inside the network, which is close to the posture PHP2Shell calls for. A zero trust engineer builds the segmentation, continuous verification, and least-privilege access controls that keep one compromised PHP server from turning into a company-wide breach, work that gets tested the moment an incident like this one proves the network perimeter was never the real boundary.

Firewall and VPN staffing for the edges attackers actually hit first

Firewalls and VPN concentrators are usually the first thing an attacker probes, and even though PHP2Shell is a server-side flaw rather than a network one, hardened edge devices decide whether a compromised web server can reach the rest of the network or gets stopped at the first hop. Firewall and VPN staffing covers the engineers who write and audit those rules on an ongoing basis, not just the technicians who install the appliance once and move on.

Fast Dolphin’s earlier guide to building a cybersecurity team from Latin America walks through how that recruiting process works role by role, for teams building out any combination of the positions above.

Matching the engagement to the incident, not the other way around

Not every one of these roles needs to be permanent on day one. Treating both the same way, either overstaffing a temporary spike or underselling a role that should be permanent, wastes security budget either way.

Cost is part of that decision too, and it varies by role.
