Manufacturers that want to hire SAP Joule consultants are looking for a person who can set up, extend and govern Joule, SAP’s artificial intelligence (AI) assistant, along with the agents that now run inside its applications. That’s a different thing from SAP Joule for Consultants, the tool project teams use to speed up their own work, and the two get mixed up often enough that it helps to separate them from the start.
SAP says its Autonomous Enterprise has arrived, which puts the staffing question on the same roadmap as the S/4HANA program itself. This guide covers the roles that matter, what they cost in the US, where the shortages show up, and how nearshore staffing from Latin America can fill them.
consultores de SAP unveiled the Autonomous Enterprise at Sapphire in Orlando on May 12, 2026, and CEO Christian Klein told SAP Connect attendees in Las Vegas on October 6 that the Autonomous Enterprise has arrived. In practice that means Joule is moving from demo to rollout. SAP says it will deploy more than 50 domain-specific Joule Assistants that orchestrate over 200 specialized agents, and RISE with SAP customers will have three of those assistants activated within their first year.
Companies still running SAP ERP Central Component (ECC) or on-premises S/4HANA aren’t shut out, but SAP ties access to select AI scenarios to a commitment to move the majority of their existing systems to SAP Cloud ERP, so the AI roadmap and the enterprise resource planning (ERP) migration roadmap now depend on each other. Klein was direct about what that takes, saying that moving to the Autonomous Enterprise “requires serious change management”. SAP’s announcements say little about who will do that work, so the evidence on talent in the sections below comes from user groups and surveys rather than from SAP.
SAP Business AI talent is a small set of specific roles rather than one SAP AI consultant who covers everything. The first hires usually go to whoever can design agents, whoever knows the process well enough to judge what those agents produce, and whoever controls what they’re allowed to do. It also helps to keep the terms straight, because SAP Joule for Consultants is a conversational AI solution that accelerates SAP cloud transformations, while the people described below are the ones you hire.
Employers already post these roles under fairly specific titles. SAP Joule job listings on ZipRecruiter include a SAP Joule Technical AI Architect / Developer, a SAP Joule AI Functional Specialist and a SAP Joule AI Security Architect, and the technical listing asks for Joule Studio 2.0, Joule Skills and Joule Agents alongside SAP Business Technology Platform (BTP), Model Context Protocol (MCP) server concepts, Open Data Protocol (OData) services, core data services (CDS) views, and orchestration frameworks such as LangChain and LangGraph. Those titles and skills map to five roles most manufacturers will need to cover.
This person designs and builds the agents in Joule Studio, connects them to SAP and non-SAP systems through BTP, and owns the prompts, skills and orchestration behind them. Because the tooling is new, screening works better on shipped work than on credentials: ask what the candidate built, what it connected to and how it was tested.
The functional specialist maps finance, procurement, production planning, maintenance and quality processes to the right assistants and agents, and knows the process well enough to tell when an agent’s output is wrong. That judgment is what keeps an assistant from becoming one more tool people work around.
This role decides what an agent can touch, which actions need human approval and what gets logged. SAP governance, risk and compliance (GRC) experience is a natural starting point, and one of the ZipRecruiter listings already asks for a GRC security consultant working with Joule and BTP.
Agents are only as good as the business data they draw on, and SAP’s AI platform pairs BTP with SAP Business Data Cloud, so someone has to prepare and govern that data. For the AI side of the work, AI staff augmentation and Fast Dolphin’s guide to generative AI developers in Latin America show what those profiles look like and what they cost.
Custom code has to move out of the core and into extensions so that upgrades and agents don’t break what the plant already depends on, and that takes a developer fluent in Advanced Business Application Programming (ABAP) as well as S/4HANA. The legacy section below covers why that combination is the hardest one to find.
Anyone trying to hire SAP developers right now is competing with every company working toward the same date, since SAP will provide mainstream maintenance until the end of 2027 for SAP ERP 6.0, followed by optional extended maintenance through 2030 at a 2-point premium on the maintenance base. The AI roadmap adds to that demand instead of replacing it. In a survey of 142 members of the Americas’ SAP Users’ Group (ASUG), 27% cited a lack of internal AI skills, and more than half said they plan to use embedded AI features and Joule agents. Research from Information Services Group (ISG) covering 200 senior decision-makers at large global companies found that nearly 60% of SAP migration projects are delayed and over budget, and the coverage of that research puts the cause plainly: “A lot of the delays are caused by people.
Oracle ERP rollouts run into the same staffing question, and for most manufacturers the practical answer is a mix of permanent staff and temporary SAP and Oracle staffing that keeps delivery moving while the search for a permanent hire runs. Fast Dolphin’s earlier look at SAP and ERP implementation talent for manufacturers covers the 2027 deadline in more detail.
No public rate card exists for Big 4 SAP work, so the useful numbers come from a few sources that each measure something different. VendorBenchmark puts day rates of $2,200 to $3,600 for a consultant at a Big 4 or top-tier integrator and $1,600 to $2,600 at a Tier 2 SAP specialist, drawing on 80+ S/4HANA migrations completed between 2023 and 2025, though it doesn’t describe its method beyond that. On the contract side, KORE1’s July 2026 guide lists $175 to $300 an hour for a solution architect or conversion lead, $130 to $190 for an ABAP-on-HANA technical consultant and $100 to $145 for a mid-level functional consultant, and KORE1 is a staffing firm, so treat those as its own estimates. On the salary side, ERPprep’s March 2026 analysis of Glassdoor data lists reported US averages of about $113,000 for an associate SAP consultant and about $182,000 for a principal, though it cautions that Glassdoor’s US figures skew high.
A solution architect at $175 to $300 an hour comes to roughly $364,000 to $624,000 over a full-time 2,080 hours a year, and that’s before a second architect or a security lead joins the team. For IT and Engineering roles in general, Fast Dolphin’s Vantagens de Custo do Nearshore found that nearshore hiring saves 54% on average against the true cost of a US hire.

Agents that read plant data or trigger maintenance and production steps pull IT/OT convergence, which connects operational technology (OT) on the plant floor to enterprise systems, into the center of the SAP roadmap. SAP’s Q2 2026 release highlights list generally available AI features in SAP Digital Manufacturing and estimate that organizations can reduce error analysis time for production process errors by 20%. That’s SAP’s own figure, and it still depends on someone who can integrate manufacturing execution system (MES) data and judge what the agent suggests.
The hiring side looks tougher than the technology. Deloitte’s 2025 smart manufacturing survey of 600 executives found that between 69% and 72% reported moderate to significant challenges hiring skilled workers for IT, OT, data science and engineering, application development and cybersecurity. Fast Dolphin’s nearshore IT and Engineering staffing for manufacturing covers ERP, MES and plant-floor work, and plants that need controls and automation skills alongside the SAP team can look at mechanical and automation engineers from Latin America as well.
An agent that can act inside SAP needs rules about what it can touch before it goes near production or procurement data, and those rules usually come from the security teams that are already behind. In the International Information System Security Certification Consortium (ISC2) 2025 workforce study, 59% of respondents cited critical or significant skills needs, up from 44% in 2024, and 88% had experienced at least one significant cybersecurity consequence from a skills deficiency, across 16,029 respondents. The SANS Institute’s 2026 workforce research reached a similar conclusion, finding that 57% pointed to delayed projects as a result of skills shortages among 947 global respondents.
Both studies are global and cover every industry, so they show the direction of the problem and not a manufacturing-specific delay rate. They still matter here because it’s the same pool a manufacturer draws on when it needs an AI security and governance architect or an OT security engineer for a plant network, and a long domestic search can push that design work behind the agent rollout it’s meant to protect.

Nearshoring and offshoring both move hiring outside the US, but the similarities mostly end there. Fast Dolphin’s breakdown of nearshore vs offshore vs onshore models walks through where the two approaches diverge on cost, time zone overlap, and day-to-day collaboration, and the short version is that nearshore teams in Latin America typically overlap six to eight hours with a US workday, while offshore teams in Asia often overlap two hours or none at all.
Cost still favors hiring outside the US, and that advantage holds for both models on paper. The real difference shows up in how a distributed team actually functions. Standups, code review, incident response, and the dozens of small handoffs that make up a normal sprint all get harder the less the workday overlaps, and a detailed cost comparison between US and Latin American development teams shows the savings gap holds even before you factor the time zone difference into total cost of ownership.
Heavily customized ECC systems are where upgrades and agent rollouts slow down, because someone has to know why the old code exists before deciding whether it moves, gets rebuilt or retires. SAP’s clean core guidance says to prioritize extensions only for business-differentiating processes and to keep them decoupled from the core through released APIs, which asks a lot of the developers doing the work.
SAP has also made an S/4HANA custom code migration agent in Joule for Developers generally available, and it claims its agent-led migration tooling can reduce ERP migration effort by more than 35%. Klein’s own line that “almost right” isn’t good enough for mission-critical processes applies here, because whoever reviews the agent’s proposed changes has to understand the code being replaced. When you hire SAP developers for this work, look for ABAP experience on the legacy system and shipped S/4HANA work, since either one alone leaves a gap.
Most manufacturers will end up with a mix, because the roles don’t all last the same length of time. Agent design, a migration push and the clean-up of custom code are project-sized work that SAP staff augmentation handles well, since you add named people to your own team and the knowledge stays with you when the assignment ends. The governance lead and the architect who will own the agent roadmap for years are better hired permanently.
Either way, agents get tested with the people who run the process, so working the same hours matters, and Fast Dolphin’s look at time zone overlap for US IT teams explains how that shows up in delivery speed. A simple place to start is a list of which of the five roles you already have, which you can train, and which need to be added before the first agent goes live.
Fast Dolphin is a nearshore IT and Engineering staffing company that gives US manufacturers access to tens of thousands of vetted professionals across Latin America, so a scarce profile doesn’t mean starting a search from zero. The first candidate is delivered in 24 to 48 hours, cost runs significantly lower than US-based hiring, and the professionals work in your time zone, with bilingual talent available when a project needs it. Joule experience is new and some niche profiles are limited everywhere, so Fast Dolphin tells you up front when a role is thin instead of sending candidates who don’t fit. It can also search for the ERP, IT/OT and security specialists around the Joule roles, including developers who know legacy ABAP as well as S/4HANA.
Temporary Staffing fits project-sized work like building the first agents, covering a migration push or adding an IT/OT or security specialist ahead of go-live, and it can start under Contract-to-Hire when you want a built-in path to permanent. Staffing para Contratação Direta fits a permanent Joule architect or governance lead, and every Direct Hire placement includes a 90-day replacement guarantee: if the professional leaves or is let go for documented poor performance within the first 90 days, Fast Dolphin replaces them at no cost, or refunds the fee on a pro rata basis if it can’t.
Share the roles and timeline in our contact form, and we’ll deliver your first candidate in 24 to 48 hours.
A SAP Joule consultant is a person who sets up, extends and governs Joule and its agents for your business. SAP Joule for Consultants is a separate SAP product, an AI tool that SAP project professionals use to speed up their own work. You hire the first and license the second.
Current job listings ask for Joule Studio, Joule Skills and Joule Agents, plus BTP, MCP concepts, OData services, CDS views and orchestration frameworks like LangChain. Pair those with process knowledge in the area the agent will touch. Because the tooling is new, ask for shipped work and how it was tested.
No published rate exists for Joule-specific work. The closest reference is KORE1’s $175 to $300 an hour for a solution architect or conversion lead, and a full-time year at 2,080 hours puts that at roughly $364,000 to $624,000. Fast Dolphin’s report found a weighted average of 54% savings against the true cost of a US hire.
It depends on how long you need the role. Project-sized work like agent design or a migration push suits staff augmentation, where named people join your team and the knowledge stays with you. A permanent governance lead or architect is better hired directly, while a consultancy fits when you want an outside firm to own delivery.
Not entirely. SAP says ECC and on-premises S/4HANA customers aren’t excluded and can access select AI scenarios, provided they commit to moving the majority of their existing systems to SAP Cloud ERP. RISE with SAP customers get three Joule Assistants activated in their first year, so the migration plan and the AI plan need to be built together.
You need clear rules on what each agent can access, which actions require a human approval and what gets logged, designed before the agent goes near production or procurement data. That design work usually falls to an AI security and governance architect, which is why the role belongs early on the hiring plan.
Yes on time zone, since Fast Dolphin’s professionals work in US hours and can sit in the same daily standups as your team. Security requirements are set in your own contract and access controls, and you decide what each person can reach, so share them when you describe the role.
